Injection Therapy

Injection Therapy

Our office offers injection therapy as one of the many treatments available to the patient in order to treat acute, sub acute (longer than 6 weeks) and chronic pain. Injection therapy can be used for different reasons and in different parts of the foot. It can be used on its own to treat the problem or in combination with other treatment modalities.

Cortisone Injections

Cortisone is a strong anti-inflammatory medication used to treat inflammation and pain in both soft tissue and joints. In our office we utilize corticosteroid injection therapy to treat different conditions of the foot including:

  • bursitis (inflammation of a bursa)
  • tendonitis (a tendon irritation/inflammation)
  • ligament inflammation (ankle sprains)
  • plantar fasciitis
  • ganglionic cysts
  • scars ( keloid scars)
  • fibromas
  • trigger point injections
  • nerve inflammation (Morton’s neuroma)
  • joint pain (due to arthritis or an injury)

Corticosteroid injections have a rapid onset and in most of the cases substance injected is with different medications (i.e. l local anaesthetic, b-12 solutions) in order to achieve needed results.

Sclerotherapy Injections

Sclerotherapy is the use of diluted alcohol sclerosing injections on nerves and keratototic lesions such as plantar keratosis, porokeratosis, fibromas and keratoderamas. It is also very effective in the treatment of painful scars and reoccurring fibrous lesions.

Sclerotheapy is becoming a treatment of choice in the case of interdigital neuroma (Morton’s neuroma), nerve entrapments or stump neuromas. Stump neuroma is the case of scar tissue formation after a surgical excision of the nerve.

Sclerothrapy of the nerve is often referred to as chemical sympathectomy based on the fact that alcohol solution is causing selective nerve degeneration or neurolysis until the nerve is destroyed or ceases to function. This treatment is very effective and the research indicates success rate as high as 82% in the case of interdigital/Morton’s neuromas.

Homeopathic/Natural Based Injections

Homeopathic injections is another treatment modality that we offer to our patients in order to control inflammation and pain. These injections are often utilized in the case of people that prefer natural products to manage pain and discomfort or in the patients that have allergies to NSAIDS or cortisone injections. Homeopathic injections can be utilized on its own or in combination with natural or regular oral anti-inflammatories. One nice thing about these injections is that side effects area minimal and that there is no limit to the number of injections that can be given into the specific area as we have in the case of cortisone injections.
